History
It is fair
to say as long as we have existed as a species, humans have had an affinity
with crystals and stones. Since the beginning men have gazed at the shapes of
crystals and stones whose origins they could not begin to understand or
explain. It is not surprising these unique one of a kind creations in formation
and color are believed to hold supernatural powers. This leads us to the
question:
Where did they come
from?
The first historical reference to the use of
crystals comes from the Ancient Sumerians, who included crystals in magic
formulas. The ancient Egyptians used
Lapis Lazuli, Carnelian, Clear Quartz and Emerald in their jewelry. They also
carved grave amulets and even made eye shadow with finely ground Turquois and
Galena for royalty. The ancient Egyptians used crystals and stones primarily
for protection and health.
The Ancient Greeks attributed a number of properties to
crystals and many names we use today are of Greek origin. The word CRYSTAL comes from the Greek word for ice as it was believed that clear quartz
was water that had frozen so deeply that it would always remain solid. The word
AMETHYST means 'not drunken' and was worn as an amulet to prevent both drunkenness
and hangovers. Hematite comes from
the word for blood, because of the red coloration produced when it oxidizes. Jade
was highly valued in Ancient China, they made musical instrument in the form of
chimes out of jade and Chinese emperors were sometimes buried in Jade armor.
How did we start using them for
energy healing?
Talismans and Amulets
The use of talismans and amulets date back to the beginnings
of humankind, although we have no way of knowing how the earliest of these
objects were viewed or used. The earliest amulets were made of Baltic amber
30,000 years ago and amber beads were discovered in Britain nearly 10,000 years
ago the end of the last ice age. Amulets
no were banned by the Christian church in 355 A.D.
Crystals in Religion
Crystals and stones are mentioned throughout the Holy Bible,
Buddhist texts and the Koran as well as many other religious texts. The origin
of birthstones is the breastplate of Aaron, or the "High Priest's
Breastplate", as mentioned in the book of Exodus. In the Koran, the
4th Heaven is composed of carbuncle garnet. The Kalpa Tree, which represents an offering to the gods in Hinduism,
is said to be
made entirely of precious stone and a Buddhist text from the
7th century describes a diamond throne situated near the Tree of Knowledge (the
tree under which Siddhartha meditated).
Tribal Cultures
Many tribal cultures have continued the use of gemstones in
healing to modern day. It is interesting to note that there are many examples
of gemstones meaning similar things to different cultures even when there has
been absolutely no interaction between these cultures and no opportunity for
crossover. An example of this would be Jade.
Jade was considered to be a kidney healing stone by the ancient Chinese, and
also Aztec and Mayan civilizations. Turquoise
has been worn to give strength and health all over the world, and jaspers have
almost always indicated both strength and calmness.
Modern Metaphysics
In this modern day and age with the rising costs of
medicine, medical treatments and therapy, addressing and maintaining our
physical health can seem like a luxury. Hospitals, the government and insurance
companies have led us to believe that we simply cannot AFFORD to feel better. We will even accept a job (we don’t like)
and work our entire lives in order to have health insurance in case we should
need it someday. Sadly, it is the job itself, the lack of quality time with our
loved ones, with no time to heal, love and nurture ourselves that causes the
health problems to begin with. Crystal
therapy crosses the boundaries of religious and spiritual beliefs.
It is no longer viewed as the domain of alternative culture, but as an
acceptable and more mainstream complimentary therapy, and many colleges now
offer it as a qualification subject.
We are made of energy
Our universe is one of many vibrations. Absolutely
everything including us vibrates at a molecular level! In some things, these
vibrations tend to cancel one another due to the chaotic structure of that
substance. But other things, like crystals
and stones, have structures that allow these vibrations to add together. Stones and crystals each
have a unique structure and composition. This gives each one a unique vibration
rate and quality. This addition of these vibrations and structures will amplify
and radiate this energy of vibration. These vibrations are subtle, but they can
be used to help you handle many of life’s everyday problems. At the heart of a crystal
is the atom and its component parts. An atom is dynamic, consisting of
particles rotating around a center in constant motion. So, although a crystal may look relatively harmless, it is actually a
seething molecular mass vibrating at a certain frequency packed with a powerful
punch that can help us CHANGE our environment. This is what gives a crystal
its energy. Your body is made of the same elements found in stones and
crystals. Your body and its internal organs is a collection of parts, each with
a specific structure (on a chemical level), each made up of different
combinations of carbon, hydrogen and other elements. Because of its
structure and composition, each part of your body vibrates and emits energy
into the space around it. If you could see these vibrations which are very high
frequency you would see them as an energy body that extended well beyond your
physical one. Impurities within your body alter these vibrations, adding
chaotic elements that distort your energy body. These distortions can starve
some areas of your physical body, preventing them from getting the correct
vibrational energy that keeps them operating in harmony with the rest of the
parts that make up your physical self. Since stones and crystals vibrate
and emit pure, strong vibrations at constant rates, they can be used to help
eliminate distortions and restore proper balance, leading to better overall
physical, mental and spiritual well being. Each stone and crystal emits subtle vibrations that can influence a specific area of your body. Matching the stone or crystal to its specific area allows you to get the most benefit from them. Scientific evidence about the potential health benefits & the risks associated with stones & crystals are hard to come by, but crystals & stones have been used for thousands and thousands of years. This would seem to indicate not only are they safe, but also effective. However, always seek medical attention from a qualified medical or mental health worker, or a Natural Health Practitioner, if you suspect you have a serious problem. The energies radiated from crystals and gems are subtle, and work over time.

General use of stone
How we use them
today:
Landscaping, decorative, jewelry and accessories and most
importantly METAPHYSICAL. Crystals and
stones can be used metaphysically by wearing them, holding them during
meditation, placing them in close proximity, or as simple as placing them on
your bedside table or alter. Don’t be surprised if your crystals terminate
themselves by breaking accidentally or unexpectedly. This means that the
crystal has done its job and is no longer of service. I like to bury them after
they break and return them to Mother Earth with a brief prayer of gratitude for
the service the crystal provided me. Also, you may be guided to give your
crystals away to friends or family. Do not ignore this feeling if this happens
to you. I have given away many crystals this way. Trust that the person you
were guided to give it to needed it for a specific purpose that is forthcoming.

Clear

revitalizes the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual planes.

cleanser, connecting the physical dimension with the mind. Clear Quartz
enhances psychic abilities. It aids concentration and unlocks memory.
Stimulates the immune system and brings the body into balance. Clear

Citrine
Citrine is known as the "success stone"
because it promotes success, prosperity, and abundance. It particularly
promotes success in business, earning it another nickname, "merchant's
stone", and is said to bring business if put in the cashbox of a shop or
carried. Citrine is a stone of good fortune, although it brings good fortune in
sometimes unexpected ways. It is a stone of manifestation, helping manifest
abundance in many ways. Along with prosperity and good fortune, citrine imparts
generosity, to share the wealth, so to speak. As a solar plexus chakra stone it
is said to increase and magnify personal energy and power. Citrine dissipates
negative energies of all kinds. It also does not absorb any negative energies
from its surroundings, and thus never needs energetic clearing. Citrine can be
used to clear unwanted energies from the environment. Family issues caused by
negative energies can also be resolved and cleared with citrine. Since citrine
eliminates negative energies, it helps generate stability in all areas, and is
good for general protection. In the mental area, citrine enhances mental
clarity, confidence, and will power. It also increases creativity and promotes
honesty.
Emotionally,
citrine relieves depression, self-doubt, anger, and irrational mood swings.

Black Onyx
enhances steadfastness and determination, setting one’s mind to a task. It is
grounding stone, valuable in difficult or confusing times in our lives.
Extremely helpful to people who are in the process of "letting go" or
releasing the past attachments to "people, places and things.
Excellent stone
for initiating the process of centering and alignment of the total person with
a Higher Power. It helps us to absorb whatever energy we need from the
Universe.
Can be used to
deflect or absorb the negativity of others, and in that way is a good stone for
protection from negative forces and influences. More powerful for people
in recovery when combined with Amethyst - The Stone of Sobriety.

Fluorite promotes spiritual and psychic wholeness and
development, truth, protection, and brings peace. It protects psychically and
in the physical realm. “The Gemstone of Discernment”, Fluorite is a
powerful crystal for producing order and stabilization in all the realms of
being. It heightens both logical and intuitive abilities, and the presence /
awareness of higher realms and realities.
It offers impartiality and unbiased reasoning, and allows
the wielder to use their powers of intuition and intelligence in a balanced and
discerning way. Fluorite enhances concentration and allows one to cut through
illusion to see to the truth of the matter. It can help get rid of mental
blocks and similar mental issues.
Fluorite is a multi-dimensional gemstone. It advances the
highest aspect of the mind, that which is attuned to the I AM. Fluorite
balances the positive and negative aspects of the mind (ego) allowing one to
experience inner peace and quicken ones spiritual awakening.

Labradorite
Labradorite (also called Spectrolite sometimes) is a
considered by mystics to be a stone of transformation. It is said to clear,
balance and protects the aura. It is purported to help provide clarity and
insight into your destiny, as well as attract success. It is used in
metaphysics for dream recall, and finding ways to use dreams in daily life.
Mystically, energies of stress and anxiety are reduced by labradorite.
Physical Uses: Labradorite
is said to increase intuition, psychic development, esoteric wisdom, help with
subconscious issues, and provide mental illumination. Labradorite is associated
with the solar plexus and brow chakras.
Amethyst
Amethyst is purple quartz, and is a meditative and
calming stone. It works in the emotional, spiritual, and physical planes to
provide calm, balance, patience, and peace. Amethyst is also beneficial when
dealing with legal problems and money issues, which can lead to prosperity and
abundance.
Emotionally, amethyst can help heal personal losses
and grief. Amethyst has a gently sedative energy that promotes peacefulness,
happiness, and contentment. It also brings emotional stability and inner
strength, and can enhance flexibility and cooperation. Amethyst can help get
rid of addictions (alcohol, drugs, smoking, etc.) and compulsive behaviors of
all kinds.
In the psychic and spiritual realms, amethyst is an
excellent all-purpose stone that can increase spirituality and enhance
intuition and psychic powers of all kinds. It does this by making a clear
connection between the earth plane and other planes and worlds. Amethyst is
also excellent for meditation and lucid dreaming. It is known to open one's
channels to telepathy, past life regression, clairaudience, clairvoyance, and
communication with angels. Amethyst also protects against psychic attacks,
especially during spiritual work, and protects one from thieves, and protects
travelers.
Physical
Uses: Amethyst is said by
spiritual healers and mystical lore to heal the withdrawal symptoms of any sort
of addiction, help with headaches, insomnia, arthritis, diabetes, pain relief,
circulatory system issues, endocrine system problems, chronic fatigue,
fibromyalgia, immune system deficiencies, asthma, phobias, pregnancy and
preventing miscarriage, menopause, PMS, and general healing. Amethyst is
associated with the third eye and crown chakras primarily, but can also open
the heart chakra.

Hematite
Hematite stones are known to create a protective
environment, a sort of reflective shield around the person who wears them. This
makes these stones convenient for meditation. The created shield enables
reflecting negative energies, thoughts and feelings back to their source. This
feature calls for caution, since likewise your negative thoughts can be
reflected back to you. In meditation hematite nicely combines with rock crystals. Hematite is used to
ground down the energies and information, that come from the seventh crown
chakra, that is, from the higher spiritual and Divine spheres into the physical
world.
Hematite is a male stone. This is obvious from the excess of iron in its
structure, as iron is a typical male element. It is a stone of male love which
promotes creating a relationship of love, balance and peace. Some say this
stone brings mental clarity, better focus and concentration, clear thoughts and
develops photographic memory.
Physical uses: On
the physical level hematite heals and recuperates, as well as regroup the
forces within our organism after difficult times and procedures, such as
anesthesia, invasive searches, stress and devastating moments of one's ego. It
helps in regeneration of the skin. Hematite is a powerful stone to extract
negative energies from the body. While holding this stone in your hands
visualize the desired healing process and then put hematite on top of the
affected area or tissue.
But what really puts hematite over all the other stones is the blood related
problems. This is perfect stone for blood circulation problems, anemia, and
bleeding. Likewise, it is very good for healing wounds and cuts.
Rose Quartz
Rose Quartz emits a calming energy, which can to remove
negativity and reinstate loving and gentle forces of self-love on all of the
chakras. Provides calmness, clarity and restores the mind to harmony after
chaotic or crisis situations. It is known as the "stone of gentle
love", bringing peacefulness and calm to relationships. It enables one for
receptivity of art, music and written word. It stimulates imagination,
representing warm and young love. It provides balancing of the Yin-Yang energy
and can tune each chakra with the proper frequency of energy vibration. Rose
Quartz is quite effective in treating conditions that are related to the
emotional body and balancing the emotion "Love" in the upper four
chakras (heart, throat, brow and crown). It works extremely well in healing
emotional wounds.
Physical Uses: It
can be used in the treatment of clearing the impure fluids in the cells of the
body, stress, tension, vertigo, kidneys, adrenal glands, wrinkles, pain, heart,
coughs, bronchial, lungs, blisters and burns.
Lepidolite
Lepidolite is a stone of calm, trust, and acceptance. It has
a strong relaxing and calming effect. It brings hope and is a stone of
transformation in that it helps one get through transitions with trust that
everything will ultimately turn out for the best. It engenders and enhances
self-love, patience, and optimism. Emotionally, lepidolite is an excellent
healer. It greatly decreases stress, anxiety, depression, manic-depression,
despondency, PTSD, anger, and other traumas, panic attacks, and addictions.
Psychically, lepidolite is used for dream work, rebirthing, and is also good
for dream recall. Lepidolite is also a protective stone that brings success in
business or career. It can also bring a growing energy to gardening and agriculture.
Physical Uses: Lepidolite
is helpful for healing of glands, immune system, skin, nails, hair, DNA, enzyme
balance, addiction and alcoholism recovery, pregnancy, childbirth, and general
healing. Lepidolite is related primarily to the heart chakra, and also to the
crown chakra.
Serpentine
Serpentine is used in the rise of the Kundalini. It helps
create an opening so that the Kundalini may travel and lessons the discomfort,
which is sometimes associated with movement. Placement of the mineral at the
crown chakra creates a drawing force conducive to initiating movement. It can
be used to clear the clouded areas of the chakras and to stimulate the crown
chakra. It works well in enhancing the meditative state. It has been used in
the breastplate of the high priest.
Physical uses: It
can be used for the treatment of diabetes, hypoglycemia, the elimination of
parasitic infections within the body and to elevate the absorption of calcium
and magnesium. Serpentine can render assistance to disorders in all areas of
the body: emotional, mental, conscious direction and direct energies toward the
problem as required.
Programing, caring and cleansing your
crystals and stones
Programing your stones (setting intention on them) is easy
to do and only takes a few minutes. Simply hold a clean crystal in your left
hand to communicate and feel the effects of the crystal and say something like this: “ I am asking for assistance from Mother Earth, The Universe and the
Its Creator to (state the reason you are using the stone for: increase psychic
ability, cleanse, clear, bring good health etc. ) I ask that only the highest
good and the energies it may call upon be brought to my life, the people I love
and make positive change and positive results for the greater good.”
Cleansing is important. Since most of the stones you have
read about remove, and absorb energy and illness you should cleans them by
placing them in salt overnight periodically. You may also bury them in the dirt
for 24 hours. Then, just rinse them off. The Sun and the Moon is very effective
in cleansing and recharging stones and crystals. Be careful with the Sun and
particular stones such as Amethyst which can fade the color of your stones. I
like to set my stones on a tray and put them out in the light of the full moon.
Water may be used to cleanse most stones, but water cannot be used with stones
such Hematite.
